BROADCASTING & More

Phil presents “The Art of Jazz” a weekly jazz programme broadcast nationwide on Concert FM. (92.6 in Auckland) on Saturdays at 1 pm.

He writes, edits, researches and presents each edition. This involves intensive listening to and selection of a wide variety of jazz recordings. Editions include historical and musical analysis of different genres. The content gives the listener a unique opportunity to hear music which is not available elsewhere on radio. Phil’s extensive knowledge of the international jazz scene contributes to a wider understanding of the music.

Phil has received many favourable comments about the programme, which has influenced some young musicians to seek study and a career in music. While the general emphasis is on new releases and reissues, some editions follow such themes as Back to Back where two contrasting versions of the same tune are played; Classical Connection which features jazz versions of repertoire from the classical world; Dare to be Different with unusual treatments of classic standards;  Final Bar -  portraits of recently departed jazz greats; Pick of the Year – Phil’s choice of the best releases of the year.

Jazz PackThis collection represents an overview of New Zealand's burgeoning jazz industry. The Kiwi Jazz Pack is available free to soundtrack programmers, music critics, jazz radio broadcasters, and people in similar positions.

Jazz, the music of the most individualistic expression, finds various voices in New Zealand and the six albums in this collection are emblematic of that diversity: from post - bop and violin driven swing sounds to young musicians turning the corner to hip - hop.

Sustenance's fourth album is distinctive and elegant in its approach to contemporary post-bop”
 -  Graham Reid’s introduction to the Kiwi Jazz Pack.

Real BookWith John Key, Phil compiled the Kiwi Real Books Vol.1 &2, a collection of several hundred jazz compositions by New Zealand composers. A celebration of New Zealand jazz, featuring tunes by Alan Broadbent, Mike Nock, Brian Smith, Colin Hemmingsen and many more.
