Auckland-based jazz vocalist/pianist Julie Mason (B.Mus.) is a very high profile artist who has performed extensively throughout New Zealand, appearing at all the major arts & jazz festivals and playing with this country’s foremost jazz musicians. She has performed with top Australian musicians at the Manly Jazz Festival, Sydney and the Magnetic Island Jazz Festival, Queensland, and played at some of Paris’ exclusive jazz clubs in 2005 & 2007, and in Berlin 2003 & 2007. She has been a regular artist at Auckland’s Montana Winter Jazz Series, and at Auckland’s Aotea Centre with “The First Ladies of Jazz”. She formed the vocal group “Julie Mason and The Jazz Divas” in 2005 for festival concert appearances nationwide, from Tauranga’s National Jazz Festival through to Christchurch’s International Jazz Festival and the Nelson Jazzfest.
She has featured with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in their Cisco Jazz Series, and was invited to perform with her quartet for heads of government (including Bill Clinton) at the APEC World Leader’s Dinner, at the Auckland Town Hall. She toured NZ as support act for David Gates, Bread, and her trio ushered in the new millennium at Auckland’s prestigious SKY2000 event.
Julie’s debut solo album, INVITATION ,featuring some of New Zealand’s finest jazz musicians- Murray Tanner, Andy Brown, Frank Gibson Jnr., Phil Broadhurst and Putter Smith (USA), was a sell out success. A second album, “Twelve O’Clock Tales”, was released in NZ in March 2002, to wide critical acclaim. With the inclusion of Alberto Santarelli (Italy) and Roger Manins (Sydney), it is a truly international collaboration. Her third album, ESTATE(summer) was a finalist in the 2005 N.Z. Jazz Album of the Year Awards (Tuis). A review of ESTATE can be found on the USA website www.allaboutjazz.com Her latest album, “Charmed Life”, featuring Julie Mason and the Jazz Divas has just been released (December 2 2007) on ODE records.
Julie has professionally directed shows throughout NZ and toured Europe and North America with the National Band of New Zealand. With husband Phil Broadhurst she formed The Auckland Jazz Workshop, a showcase for developing jazz talent, and she tutors in jazz vocals and piano at the New Zealand School of Music’s Albany campus.
Julie has played at all Auckland’s Jazz venues including The London Bar, Alto Bar, Gables Tavern, Birdcage Tavern, The Jazz Bar, Deschlers, Keys Piano Bar and many others. She has held long and popular residencies at several venues including Killarney Street Brasserie (5 yrs), Stamford Plaza/Regent Hotel (5 yrs) Cuba Piano Bar (3 yrs) and many others.

Solo pianist/vocalist
Julie has vast experience as a background musician for functions, covering not only jazz standards, but also popular music from 1960 to the present day, show tunes, and a light classical piano repertoire.
As a duo
Julie works with internationally renowned bass player Alberto Santarelli, and together they have held a number of successful residencies.
The Julie Mason Trio
With the addition of either NZ’s leading tenor saxophonist Brian Smith, or leading Kiwi drummer Frank Gibson, this group plays modern jazz for the true jazz aficionado. Alternatively they can play dance and background music in the style of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Diana Krall, Norah Jones etc, or the Latin jazz stylings of Jobim and Sergio Mendes.

The Christmas Tarts
Three of New Zealand's foremost Jazz singers join forces for the festive season.
Leading artists Julie Mason, Trudy Lile and Maria O'Flaherty combine their vocal talents to bring a glorious blend of harmony on a vast selection of well-known carols such as "Away In A Manger", Silent Night", Oh Come All Ye Faithful" along with many well known Christmas songs such as "White Christmas", The Twelve Days Of Christmas" and "I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus". They may even throw in "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" and "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer" for good measure!
All three vocalists have both classical and jazz training - having sung in everything from The Dorian Singers and The University Chorale to "The Four Sisters" and "The First Ladies of Jazz, so can switch from the glorious harmonies of "Joy To The World" and "Ding Dong Merrily On High" to "Santa Baby" in an instant. Their experience as jazz performers allows them to "jazz up" beautiful songs such as Mel Torme's "The Christmas Song" and make merry for the festive season.
This cheerful Christmas ensemble will enliven any Christmas function with their wit and merriment!
Pianist/vocalist Julie Mason, well known to Auckland audiences, and returned from a successful tour of Europe in 2005 to be a finalist in the NZ Jazz Album of the Year Awards for “ESTATE’(summer) ". Trudy Lile has been wowing the crowds with her group "Mojave" following her successful recording debut "Ristretto", and Maria O'Flaherty has been packing them in at The Hunting Lodge for her highly successful jazz nights, along with several other Auckland venues. |
